THE CENTER OF JAPAN
"Nihon no heso" -the center of Japan-
Nishiwaki lies at the intersection of 135°E longitude and 35°N latitude and marks the center point of Japan.
Japan lies between 24°N latitude and 46°N latitude and between 123°E longitude and 146°E longitude.
The center point of Japan was determined by averaging the extreme north, south, east, and west latitudes placing the center point of Japan in Nishiwaki City.
"Nihon-no-Heso", the "belly-button of Japan", is located in Nishiwaki.
The area surrounding the intersection of 35°N and 135°E is now part of the "Nihon Heso Park."
The Okanoyama Museum of Art was built here in 1984.
In 1985, Nihon Heso Station was also established here on the JR (Japan Railways)Kakogawa Line.
The Nishiwaki Earth Sciences Museum "TERRA DOME" was built in 1993 in Heso Park.
An 800mm aperture, reflecting lens telescope was installed and visitors are able to take delight in the stars from the belly-button of Japan.
